Shaping the Way We Teach English is a video-based training product for English language educators. It has 14 modules (topics). The videos showcase classroom scenes from around the world and have an accompanying training manual plus additional readings.
The University of Oregon developed and produced the materials through funding from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs ©2007. All materials are free of charge and copyable for non-commercial educational use.

The 58th TEFLIN International Conference at IKIP PGRI Semarang
After holding the 57th International conference at UPI Bandung (see this link), The Association of Teacher of English as Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) will hold its the 58th conference at IKIP PGRI Semarang. This time, TEFLIN will take the issue of "LANGUAGE TEACHING AND CHARACTER BUILDING" as the theme of conference.

The dynamic world life and the strategic roles of teaching English, especially to young learners, always encourage a greater need to revitalize the practice of teaching English to Young Learners in Indonesia (TEYLIN). In response to the need, the Committee of 1st National Conference on ELT and Culture at UMK calls for presentation and workshop proposals of the conference to be held in the campus of English Education Department, Muria Kudus University at Kudus (located in the slope of Muria Mountain about 50 kilometers from Semarang, the Capital of Central Java). The presentation may include theoretical and/or empirical (research-based) papers of TEYLIN. Workshops are also welcome. English is the official language for the presentations and submissions of the conference.

JETA Study Visit to Mountainview International School
Last Tuesday, 28 September 2010, JETA visited Mountainview International Christian School Salatiga. There were 32 teachers from various of SMA at Jepara joined this activity. It was very great experience, we were accepted beyond our imagination. We didn't think that we would get such a great experience.
JETA left for Salatiga at 5.30 in the morning. Actually we planned to depart at 5 o'clock, but the bus came late. We arrived at Mountainview at 8.30. Ibu Maria Teguh, the public relation of Mountainview, had already waited for us.
On the first agenda, we were allowed to observe teaching and learning process at the classroom. We were divide into groups of five,and we were allowed to join the class, but during observation, they were not allowed to disturb even make a phone call and SMS.
On the second agenda, we had a chance to discuss with the principle of Mountainview, Ibu Lisa Richardson, at a very nice and luxuary auditorium. The principle presented a series power point of mountainview followed by questionand answer. We were discussing on everything at mountainview including curriculum, intra and extra activity, shool board and more.
The last, we were given opportunity to interact with students. Actually it was bahasa Indonesia lesson, ibu Maria ask the students to talk to us. We were having chat at a beautiful hall. Students of Mountainview were very nice. They shown us the environment surrounding Mountainview. They brought us to gym, soccer field and salak field.
Many thanks to Mountainview. We hope that our visit will create relationship between Indonesia and the countries of Mountainview students.

57th TEFLIN International Conference
“Revitalizing professionalism in ELT as a response to the globalized world”

Bandung, 1-3 November 2010
The 57th TEFLIN International Conference Committee invites presentation proposals for its 57th conference to be held in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, on November 1-3, 2010. The official language for the conference, including presentations and submissions, is English.
Content Areas
The conference includes discussions on the following ELT-related areas:
1) Teacher professional development and quality assurance
2) Curriculum, syllabus, and material development
3) Assessment and evaluation
4) Current classroom practices
5) The utilization of ICT
6) Culture, literature, and linguistics
Document Submission Requirements
The deadline for submission of presentation proposals is August 14, 2010. Proposals to be considered for presentation should preferably be short research-based papers, of 750-1,000 words (excluding references), covering the background of the study, in which theoretical bases are included, methodology, findings and conclusions. Non-research papers (argumentative, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive) are also acceptable.
The title should be given at the top of the first page, along with the name of the presenter(s) and their affiliation below the title on the right. Biographical data should not exceed 100 words and should be written on a separate page in the third person. Thirty minutes are allotted for a research paper presentation (including question and answer session), and sixty minutes for a workshop or colloquium. Accepted short papers will be announced on August 31 2010. Participants whose short papers are accepted should submit complete papers not later than 30 September 2010. Complete papers should be of approximately 5000 words, font size 11, Times New Roman, single spaced, with a top and left margin 1.2 inch, bottom and right margin 1 inch, and written in Letters (8,5 x 11 inch) with an abstract with key words and references following APA format. Concurrent Session Presenters
In twenty concurrent sessions, as many as 160 presenters are expected to share their ideas and the results of their research in 30 minutes. Presenters from Indonesia are encouraged to submit the research papers of their presentations to such international journals as ASIA TEFL Journals, ESL Asia Journals, The New English Teachers, Hong Kong Journal of Language Teaching, RELC Journal, and to TEFLIN Journal, the Association’s refereed scholarly journal.
Fees
A registration fee of Rp 825.000 (US$ 83) will be charged for registration made no later than Oct. 7, 2010. Registration fee paid after Oct. 7, 2010 and no later than Oct. 23, 2010 will be charged at Rp 875.000 (US$ 90). The fee covers two lunches, five coffee breaks, annual TEFLIN membership (for Indonesian participants), two volumes of TEFLIN Journals, and seminar kits. Getting to Bandung. The Conference will be held in the city of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. It is located in the southeastern part of Jakarta. Direct flights are available from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From Jakarta International Airport to Bandung, bus or mini bus shuttle services are available, and take around 3-4 hours.
Getting to the Conference Site. If you stay around Jl. Setiabudhi, a taxi is a convenient option. However, some hotels provide shuttle services from the hotels to the conference site.

Birth of Power Teaching
Power Teaching / Whole Brain Teaching was created in 1999 by Chris Biffle, a college philosophy professor, Jay Vanderfin (kindergarten) and Chris Rekstad (4th grade) in the small Southern California town of Yucaipa. This method is a radical new teaching system based on three principles: the system should be brain based, fun and free and may be used on students in kindergarten through college.
The main components of Power Teaching include classroom management and teaching method

Gestures (Hands and eye, Mirror)

The last meeting with Kerry Persen
On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, MGMP Bahasa Inggris jepara held the meeting at SMA Islam Jepara. This meeting was very special because it was the last meeting with Kerry Persen, ETA at SMAN 1 Jepara for year 2009-2010.
On the first agenda, the leader of MGMP introduced a teaching system called Whole Brain teaching. MGMP Leader also showed video of Power Teaching / Whole Brain Teaching. On the last, MGMP leader practiced how to teach using Whole Brain Teaching.
On her presentation, Kerry Persen described some mistake that often made by students in Indonesia. She showed her finding during 9 months in Jepara. Here are the example of mistake made by students.

PENGAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS BERWAWASAN KEWIRAUSAHAAN
Pendidikan kewirausahaan merupakan salah satu isu terkini yang berkaitan dengan pendidikan selain isu mengenai green school dan pendidikan budi pekerti (pendidikan karakter bangsa). Sebenarnya pendidikan kewirausahaan sudah tidak asing lagi bagi mahasiswa perguruan tinggi dan siswa sekolah menengah kejuruan. Namun ditingkat sekolah menengah pertama dan sekolah menengah atas kegiatan ini belum dikenal. Sudah ada beberapa institusi sekolah yang telah mencanangkan kewirausahaan sebagai kegiatan tambahan di sekolah mereka.
Sebenarnya materi kewirausahaan dapat dimasukkan kedalam materi pelajaran yang diajarkan di SMP maupun SMA. Dari hasil angket dan wawancara terhadap beberapa guru Bahasa Inggris SMA di Kabupaten Jepara menunjukkan bahwa masih banyak guru Bahasa Inggris yang tidak menyentuh materi kewirausahaan serta belum mengetahui materi dan model pembelajaran Bahasa Ingris berwawasan kewirausahaan.
Melalui pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang mengintegrasikan materi berwawasan kewirausahaan, serta mengacu pada karakteristik dan sifat wirausahawan unggul, diharapkan siswa akan termotifasi untuk menjadi wirausahawan yang tangguh pada saatnya nanti.
Sebenarnya materi kewirausahaan dapat dimasukkan kedalam materi pelajaran yang diajarkan di SMP maupun SMA. Dari hasil angket dan wawancara terhadap beberapa guru Bahasa Inggris SMA di Kabupaten Jepara menunjukkan bahwa masih banyak guru Bahasa Inggris yang tidak menyentuh materi kewirausahaan serta belum mengetahui materi dan model pembelajaran Bahasa Ingris berwawasan kewirausahaan.
